  • I happened to change to Sky News at 5.09pm today (Jan 8th 2005) and saw Francis Wilson (as part of a report on the storms yesterday) standing in front of a weather map that wasn’t the normal one (this was in fact confirmed by Sky News Active’s weather loop). Have I seen the unoffical premiere of a new set of Sky News Weather Graphics?

Don’t think they were ‘new’ graphics, just the enhanced ones that five news have been using.

Funny you should mention the weather graphics, Sky News has been using new and enhanced map graphics for the purposes of the tsunami disaster that they have not used before. I think some stuff of theirs must be being produced at their new news centre, surely the building must be close to being finished if Five News are in there. Besides, Five were doing rehersals for the output months before their live date, Sky must be doing the same thing. Presenters would need to feel comfortable in the new studio before they go live.
Perhaps that could explain the absence of some of Sky’s presenters (excluding the ones in asia). I know they were broadcasting a lot from asia after the disaster, but every time they did broadcast and have ever since from the newsroom, they used irregular line-ups. For example Michael Wilson being used, hwere was Steve Dixon, Emma Crosby, Mark Longhurst, Lorna Dunkley? And Allan King and Paula have only just been brought in as has Greg. It seemed like only Anna, Viv, Juliette and Michael were available, a little odd. And where is Lisa Aziz today?

Maybe I’m being just a little to speculative, but the newsroom seems very quiet these days too, not so many people back there now. Wonder why…

Good to see Allan King back, he is one of the presenters that just gets on with it and does not try the “look how important I am” rubbish that some presenters have done.

Hello, what’s this? Francis Wilson on Channel 5? And there’s the graphics I saw on Channel 5 News! The future of the Sky News Weather Forecast perhaps?

The graphics on Five weather would appear to be a stop-gap until Sky News moves into their new studio when they will also get new graphics including weather, and it will most likely be in widescreen.

the graphics you saw were not enhanced. They were exactly the same as is what is usually seen on Sky News.

The only difference was that the TODAY 6.00pm yadda yadda bit was in a different colour and the map was a slightly brighter green.

The new graphics will probably come in as was said earlier – when sky news relaunch, and will probably be in widescreen.

Maybe it’s just me but do the new graphics that channel 5 use remind you of the ones used 20 odd years ago on the BBC’s breakfast programme. When I saw Francis Wilson presenting the weather on Channel 5 my mind went back to the days when he presented the weather on the BBC first thing in the morning. Was it “Breakfast Time” you called the programme?

Sky News will be in 16:9 when it relaunches, just like five News. As for the weather graphics, I believe they are to be changed.
