Speculation on a new weather presenter has been rife since Brendan Horan accepted redundancy two weeks ago, after being with TVNZ since 2005.
Horan left TVNZ on Friday after taking redundancy.
Sunday News understands Hickey, who retired as weather anchor in 2003, is hot favourite to take the position.
Hickey was surprised when Horan’s departure was announced but believes it may be due to a new direction from TVNZ.
Hickey who is quick to point out there is no offer on the table also admits he’s missed the TV role he had for 15 years.
He moved to New Plymouth four years ago to look after parents Jim Snr and Tilly.
