Al-Jazeera International has announced a number of signings to its sports team ahead of the channel’s launch next month.
Five News reporters Andy Richardson and Rahul Pathak, who has presented both news and sport bulletins for the channel, are to join the channel to to host its weekly magazine programme, Sportsworld. They will be joined by ex-ITV News Channel Sports presenter Joanna Gasiorowska.
The programme will take a look at sports from across the world including North American sports, sailing and winter sports. Sportsworld will also focus on the unsung heroes of sport as well as interviewing the big names. The channel is also promising to show highlights of big sporting events.
Stuart Young, the al-Jazeera International head of sport, said: “I am delighted to have such a group of individuals whose breadth of knowledge, depth of experience and all-round strengths will take us to the forefront of sports reporting.
“Together, we will work to bring viewers around the globe the latest from the world of sport. From countries often overlooked, on sports often under-reported, we hope to inform and enlighten as well as entertain and excite.” With a 25-year career in journalism, Young was the youngest deputy editor of the Nine O’Clock News, and Dubai TV’s news editor where he went on to produce and present the gulf’s first home-grown sports programme.
