I have heard or rather read that Sky are interested in poaching Sir Trevor McDonald from ITV when his contract ends in the autumn.

Some other guy will be doing the Tonight programme and Trevor hasn’t signed a new contract with ITV yet.

I think this would be great if Sky could pull it off, i guess we’ll have to watch this space to see whether this amounts to anything or not.

    Please no!!!!

No offence to Sir Trev – but has he not made enough millions to retire. I know that he is the nation’s favourite newsreader, but will he continue until he is presenting the news with the aid of a life support machine.

Yet again – another outside presenter. I think that this would be a damning indictment for existing SKY News staff. Are they second rate compared to BBC or ITV journalists?

    Emphatically NO they are NOT!!

I agree. To appoint Sir Trevor would be a huge mistake. i know how popular he’s been but he’s just a presenter and has none of the cutting edge qualities of current Sky News presenters. Do you think he could have handled Jacko as well as Martin did? No way! He’d be fine reading autocue but when a story broke he’d end up being the most expensive chair warmer in the business.

Sky only have to look at the talent they already have for the relaunch. I can see why they want Eamonn and a few fresh new faces but why waste all that money on an old git who’ll let the side down on the big days.

Lets hope this never happens and that Sir Trev continues to just watch Sky News from the comfort of his retirement home!

Those are valid points, if not put across slightly harsh. Though ‘if’ Sky News did get him, maybe they would only use him for pre-scripted/recorded programmes.

I agree with the fact that there is a good array of presenters currently at Sky, whom I hope do not disappear into insignificance wen the relaunch comes.

It seems from the recent appointments, and conjectured ones, that Sky News is aiming to become much more heavyweight, not just for breaking news, but for all news aspects including specialist programming. Looks like they are going for an increase in viewer share in this country and perhaps internationally.

I think their dominance of the UK market will increase dramatically post relaunch.

    Fair cop.

I am sorry if I was being too harsh – but I seriously think that Trevor McDonald is better retiring – if I were him – I would. He has been lucky in his field, and should bow out gracefully. He is no match to Jeremy and Martin though.

Trevor would be out of his depth at SKY. As for the recent appointments, I cautiously welcome them. Those already on rock around the clock shifts could be better utilised, and should be promoted before any outsiders.

They have great presenters in Steve, David, Chris, Juliette, Emma, Kevin, Paula and Viv. Why do they need any more? Eamonn is a great signing, but SKY News is no football club!!

Perhaps you’re getting a little confused here.
My understanding is that Sir Trevors replacement on the late news has been announced but ITV are hopeful to get him to stay on and present ‘Tonight’. But Sir Trevor is interesting in a chat show or similar, and has been for a while. There has been a mention of Sky poaching him but don’t think for one minute that he’ll end up behind the news desk at Sky News. He will end up on Sky One. Don’t forget that Des Lynam and David Frost currently present for Sky and wont be seen or Sky Sports or Sky News.

Perhaps you are being a little patronising.

I initially mentioned that ‘SKY’ may be interested in signing him, people then expressed their opinions on him being on Sky News (which if Sky were to sign him, then Sky News could be a likely place seeing as they are reinventing themselves prior relaunch and did indicate that there would be further big signings after Eamon). I am simply stating what I have read and yes, ‘if’ he were to go to Sky, he may very well end up on Sky One. Of course ITV are hopeful to get him to stay, but that doesn’t negate the fact that he hasn’t yet signed a new contract with them. He may well stay with ITV, he may go to Sky, or as some hope he may yet retire.

So perhaps you are confusing what I initially posted with your own conjecture.

    Or perhaps not . . .
