Jeremy Thompson is one of Britain’s most experienced television newsmen. He was named Satellite/Digital TV Personality of the Year 2004 by the TV and Radio Industries Club and was part of the Sky News team which won the Royal Television Society ‘News Channel of the Year’ award for a record third year in a row.

Among the other awards received for his work are an Emmy from the US Academy of TV Arts & Sciences, 3 Gold Medals for Best News Reporter from the New York TV Festival, the Royal Television Society award for Sky’s coverage of the Kosovo Conflict and BAFTA’s News Award two years running in 2001 and 2002 for coverage of 9/11 and the Soham Murder hunt.

In a distinguished career, Jeremy has been a Correspondent for the BBC, ITN & Sky, covering many of the major news events of our time, reporting from nearly 100 countries around the globe and running foreign bureaux in Asia, Africa and the USA. Since switching from foreign correspondent to presenter, he’s anchored many of Sky’s major events from the field. During the Iraq War he presented ‘Live at Five’ every night from inside Iraq as his team travelled through the war zone from Basra to Baghdad. He anchored from Soham during the murder hunt, interviewing Ian Huntley and Maxine Carr the day before they were arrested.

As a foreign correspondent, Jeremy has covered over a dozen wars and civil conflicts including the Gulf War, the Balkans War, civil wars in Somalia, Sierra Leone, Sudan, Angola, Mozambique and Sri Lanka; the genocide in Rwanda in 1994; the Chinese student uprising in Tienanmen Square in 1989; the democracy riots in South Korea; coups in the Philippines and Fiji; and the violence that marked the final years of apartheid in South Africa. In 1999 he was the first TV newsman to broadcast live as British peacekeeping forces rolled into Kosovo.

He’s been on hand to witness and report some landmark elections: Margaret Thatcher in 1979; India’s Rajiv Gandhi in 1984; Benazir Bhutto in Pakistan in 1988; Australia’s Bob Hawke later the same year; Nelson Mandela in 1994; Bill Clinton in 1996; Tony Blair in 1997 and 2001; and back to the USA for George W.Bush in 2000.

Jeremy covered the 1984 gas disaster at Bhopal in India; the Queen’s historic trip to China in 1986; the Australian Bicentennial in 1988; the Hong Kong Handover in 1997; and saw the new Millenium in twice reporting live from New Zealand and Hawaii on the same day. He’s reported on floods, famines, hurricanes, monsoons, bushfires and volcanic eruptions.

He even had a small part as himself in the Hollywood movie ‘Volcano’ On the crime beat, Jeremy reported the Yorkshire Ripper story from first murder to the Old Bailey trial; the Black Panther case, the OJ Simpson trial in LA and the notorious nanny case of Louise Woodward in Boston. As a Sports Correspondent, he’s covered 3 Olympic Games, a Commonwealth Games, two Football World Cups, two Rugby World Cups, the Open Golf, the Ryder Cup, Wimbledon, 3 England cricket tours, the first ‘rebel’ cricket tour to apartheid South Africa in 1982 and a host of other major sports events.

Since moving back to London as a presenter in 1998, Jeremy has been involved in many of Sky News’ biggest live news events, anchoring both from the studio and out in the field.

They include the Liberation of Kosovo in 1999; the Concorde crash in Paris; the Pope’s historic visit to the Holy Land; the Paddington, Selby and Potters Bar train disasters; the destruction of the Twin Towers in New York on 11th September 2001 and the first anniversary; the Queen’s Golden Jubilee in The Mall; the Soham Murders and the Shuttle disaster.
