Exclusive Interview with Jeremy Thompson

In an exclusive interview with the TV Newsroom, Sky News Live At Five anchor Jeremy Thompson has hit back at those who have criticised the channel.

Thompson said that news programmes and channels will always try out new looks and styles to see if there are ways to improve and move forward and said that Sky News had always been known for innovation, for challenging the norms of news and testing the frontiers of news broadcasting.

But he did concede that “innovation has no guarantees” after the unsuccesful relaunch in October 2005 when the channel launched appointment to view programming as well as new tri-presenting slots.

Since the relaunch, Thompson has presented the Live At Five programme solo. He says that the programme gives its viewers a “good, concise review of the day so far.”

Thompson believes the channel is now back at its best; saying feedback from viewers suggests “we are providing a news product they like and enjoy and that, as always, they turn to us for breaking and rolling news.”

Thompson also spoke of his respect for Anna Botting, who co-presented with him until recently, saying that they “both have long experience of news gathering and I have a great deal of respect for her understanding of news and her knowledge of current affairs
