Double Royal Television Society (RTS) award winner Nick Powell has been a presenter on Sky Sports News since December 1996. He studied Russian and German at Bradford University before completing a post-grad in journalism at Cardiff.
At university Nick followed a traditional career path into broadcast journalism. He presented on university radio and worked for hospital radio in Cardiff.
Nick spent four years broadcasting on Pennine News and Sport before becoming a news presenter at Yorkshire Television. There he worked on sports outside broadcasts, as a presenter/ reporter/ commentator of the football, rugby league, cricket and boxing coverage.
In January 1996 Nick joined Sky as a news producer but before the year was out he was missing live broadcasting and switched back to sports presenting.
Nick is a big football fan and has been a supporter of Liverpool FC for 37 years. One of the high points of his career was meeting his hero Kevin Keegan and he was also on air when Keegan quit as England boss.
Other guests Nick has interviewed include Princess Anne and Arthur Scargill and he would love to meet the Queen.
Nick’s sporting interests include football, cricket, rugby and tennis. As well as his beloved Liverpool, Nick also follows Bradford City and Tranmere. Having studied languages Nick remains a fluent German speaker and is still able to speak Russian when circumstances force it.
Nick has made a number of appearances on It’ll Be Alright On the Night and other similar shows and was surprised – and pleased – to learn that they pay him for his clips!
