Can the rest of you back me up vis a vis my french friends, who are in the habit of WRITING ALL THEIR EMAILS – which the Academie Francaise has decreed they are to call “courriels” as email is un mot anglophone  IN CAPITAL LETTERS AND WHEN I COMPLAIN THEY TELL ME IT’S NOT SHOUTING, IT’S FRENCH AND IT’S NORMAL….. I think there’s an international protocol that you type in lower case unless you wish to be rude/shout (although why is an obvious question if you think about it, which…well, you probably don’t).

    merci or MERCI.

I’d agree with them in that it’s French and therefore normal. Everyone else of course knows that it is rude to shout unnecessarily when typing and wake everyone up.

The Americans use lots of capitals, as well.
