Breakfast co-host Paul Henry will take two months’ leave from TVNZ starting next week, although his future with the network is all but assured. Henry signed a three-year contract with the broadcaster which will see him continue to host the popular morning program.

“I’ll be back raring to go for the election but I just want the opportunity to spend a bit more time with my children and to also take a break from the hours,” said Henry, who gets up for work at 3.40am every weekday.

“I’ve got the best possible TV show at the worst possible time.

“I love it though I can’t think of any other show that gives you so much freedom and opportunity to be yourself and state your own opinions.”

Close Up host Mark Sainsbury will fill in weekly – the first of a series of presenters set to be alternated weekly. He will be getting up for work at 4am, coming home at 9pm, and hopefully resting at some point between.

“It’s only for a bloody week,” he said.

Other possible names for the temporary position include weather presenter Tamati Coffey and South Island reporter Jack Tame, who has built a fan base since starting with the show last year. The pair would both be familiar with the early morning starts needed.
