Ex-Blue Peter man ties the knot

    04 August 2005 20:31

Former Blue Peter presenter Simon Thomas had no time for pre-wedding nerves yesterday as he was busily ensuring there were enough portable loos for guests at his reception.

The Norfolk-born TV star – now working as an anchor man for Sky Sports – was making final preparations for his wedding tomorrow to fiancee, Gemma Crosland at St Nicholas Church in Sevenoaks, Kent.

His retired clergyman father, Andrew Thomas, of Cromer, is to officiate at the traditional white wedding during which his close friend, the Rev Darren Thornton, Priest-in-Charge of St Giles Church, Norwich, will lead the prayers together with Gemma’s mother, Wendy Sonnex.

Among the guests will be Simon’s sisters, Rebecca Coman and Hannah Paraskeva, both of Norwich. Rebecca’s two-year-old twin daughters, Holly and Olivia will have an important role as flower girls.

The service will be followed by a reception for 150 guests in a marquee on a friend’s farm. Among the guests will be Simon’s former Blue Peter colleagues.

Simon and the new Mrs Thomas will spend their honeymoon in Mauritius.

And the fervent Norwich City supporter has arranged for ?spies? to be in the reception marquee to keep him up to date with the score line during the first home clash of the new season against Coventry.

?I don’t think we should have too many worries about a favourable result from that game and I have arranged to be kept informed of the score and final result. By the time we sit down for the reception meal the game should be over so I can then relax?, said Simon who is a Canaries season ticket holder.

Yesterday he broke off from sorting out the marquee and portable loos to speak to the EDP about his and Gemma’s big day.

?I am looking forward to the wedding day and can’t wait and so far all the arrangements are going seamlessly. I remember that when we became engaged on holiday in Cuba last year the wedding date seemed a long time away but I told Gemma it would be here in a flash and so it is,? he said.

He said he was pleased that his dad would be performing the wedding ceremony because he also officiated at the weddings of his two sisters at Beccles so ?it completes the trilogy.?

He is to have two best men, Kristen Meadows and Graham Dalton.

It has been a busy few months for Simon since he said an emotional live television farewell to his millions of young viewers on his final show in April. He had decided to quit the long-running top children’s TV programme after six years to pursue other career interests.

And six weeks ago sports-mad Simon, 32, started his new job as a presenter for Sky Sports.

He said he has watched the programme that made him a house-hold name a few times since he quit. ?I feel it was definitely the right time to go and it is a decision I have not regretted,? he said.

On return from honeymoon, the couple will continue to live in London. Simon still owns a house in Norwich to which they hope to return one day.
