? First 24-hour TV news channel in Second Life ? First live TV broadcast to include questions from virtual world residents

Sky News announced today (Thursday 3 May) that it will launch in the 3D virtual world Second Life next month at The Guardian Hay Festival, for which Sky Arts is broadcast sponsor. Sky News is the first television news channel to take up a permanent presence in Second Life.

The 24-hour news channel is building a Second Life replica of the Sky News Centre to give residents a unique behind-the-scenes, interactive look at its newsroom. Visitors to the virtual studio will be able to sit in presenter chairs, read the autocue and visit the gallery. Other interactive features planned for the near future will allow visitors to create their own news reports, upload their own pictures and video clips of news events and even bump into and chat with Sky News presenters and reporters.

Special virtual rooms will allow residents to step in and enjoy news stories and events in an innovative and engaging way. By recreating events and scenarios, such as courtroom cases, crime scenes and natural disasters, in a 3D space Sky News will provide users with a richer experience and a deeper understanding of issues. From time to time Sky?s editors and correspondents will provide exclusive talks to Second Lifers on major home and foreign stories.

Second Lifers will also be able to take away television sets carrying a Sky News video feed with headlines and breaking news from the real world.

Sky News? Sunday Live with Adam Boulton programme (10am?12pm) will come live from The Guardian Hay Festival on Sunday 27 May, and segments will be simulcast on TV and on Second Life.

Second Life residents or ?avatars? will be able to attend the special event in a virtual Hay festival area and Sky News? Political Editor Adam Boulton will invite the Second Life audience to put their questions to his guests live on-air. It will be the first live TV broadcast to include questions fielded from a virtual world.

Sky News Head of News John Ryley said: ?Second Life presents Sky News with new and exciting opportunities to deliver news and information, by allowing people to get even closer to news events. We hope that through our virtual newsroom users will be able to connect better with the day?s news stories, leading to a greater understanding of the real world.?

Festival Director Peter Florence said: ?The Guardian Hay Festival marks its 20th anniversary this year and we are delighted that we continue to reach new audiences in both the real and virtual worlds.?

The idea is that you will be able to walk around a 3 dimensional replica of the newsroom, find out who sits where, what their jobs are, go into the gallery hear the director cueing things, read a scrolling autcue and many more things that seem to be in develpoment. From what I gather whats being rolled out in the launch is a small part of what will be there eventually

It’s all kicking off the on the Adam Boulton show from the Hay on Wye festival which is being broadcast live on the Sunday morning and on Second Lfe. Adam will take questions from the real world and the virtual at the same time. Adam and his guest will be 3D avatars, so they’ll be a 3D Boulton sat in the chair controlling the interview – in two places at once.

I think it’s really ground breaking for Sky. It shows their commitment to being a real multi media news organization and it’s leaving other channels trailing in their wake

Have a look at Second Life, it all sounds a bit weird if you try and explain it.
