I see that C5 have recently aquired an ex-beeb asian lady to read their news bulletins.

Is it my imagination or is the BBC becoming whiter and whiter in its representation?

I do believe Johnathan Ross got it right when he criticised the goings-on in the Corp.

Apart from the odd dash of asian face, and young black face on childrens TV, the ‘older’ programs, entertainment, and news are basically broadcasting to white, middleclass viewers. I fit into this group, and even i find it uncomfortable to watch the channel at times. e.g BBC1 news apart from the chap on the 6, is all about white middle-class, blond (mostly) women. I didn’t realise Britiain was so white these days!

SKY and C4 do pretty well with their ethnic breakdown..ITV are yet another joke, and C5 are obviously working on it.

    Rant for the morning done!

I’ve personally always found the beeb to be quite diverse in terms of the number of ethnic faces that get the opportunity to appear on the TV, I think ITV are OK, C4 are better then most, but Sky are the worst. That’s my honest opinion.

i think they fail miserably when it comes to news. And now they’ve sadly let go of The Legend – Moira Stuart, and they lost Darren to Al Jazeera. Their news presentig just seems to be a ‘white thing’.

The arguement that people should get the job on the ability rather than colour doesn’t stand either. Other channels seem able to find their black news presenters with the ability to do the job, so what’s the BBCs excuse? Black people can’t read news?

Is it just the beeb’s lack of black presenters you find unfavourable? Because apart from theirlack of black presenters, overall I don’t see the BBC as a racist organisation, I think they are far more diverse then Sky.

    Not at all.

They just appear to have lost their way somewhat, particularly in reference to the presenters used on their news programs….however credit where deserved, and it was nice to see the sports bloke on yesterday with michelle hussain. They do well with reporters, just dissappointing to see a lack of black faces fronting news.

ITV are far worse i feel. There is a lack of ethnic diversity on much of their output…not just news.

I must be more sensitive to this as i live in a very ethnically diverse region of the country.

I live in a pretty ethnically diverse city too.

Don’t forget the beeb had two African Carribean weather presenters, though one has left for Al-Jazeera. They also had one of my fave reporters, Rageh Omar, until guess what, he left for AJI as well.

What a shame! I suppose it was a case of bigger bucks!

Haven’t seen any of AJI…is it any good?

    Hi Lone,

Yeah, I agree Al Jazeerah is a professionally presented news channel.

Can’t help thinking that there’s going to be a serious anti-west bias overall,

but let’s face it, we suffer the opposite from the established UK news channels don’t we???

    Have a nice day.

THESE NEWS ORAGNISATION LIKE THE BBC,ITV, CHANNEL5, AND SKY NEWS NEED TO DO SOMTHING ABOUT THEIR LACK OF ETHNIC PRESENTERS, AND CORRESOPONDENTS. WATCHING THE NEWS NOW ADAYS ALL YOU SEE IS WHITE PRESENTERS, AND IF THIS DOESN’T CHANGE I THINK IT WILL EFFECT THESE NEWS ORGANISATION AT SOME

    POINT..

Thought i was the only one who’d noticed this.

I think they don’t actually care about how they come across – like most organisations i imagine that there is a lot of cronism playing a part in what we the public have to endure.

That’s just it Plexus, IMHO there isn’t any anti-west bias, I see it as very well balanced. Heck, I’d even go as far to say that in some ways it does slightly lean towards as being pro-western, but if you look at it form the perspective of Sky or any American news channel, it may not seem that way.

It’s probably the best balanced channel out there (who’d have thought that of Al-Jazeera no less).

Interesting debate on Legend – Moira Stuart going on at

    http://www.tvforum.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?t=24587&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=108“>http://www.tvforum.co.uk/forum/viewtopi … &start=108

This may show my years, however, I remember an interview in which Moira spoke quite emotionally of how hard it was for her when she first started. The British viewers didn’t take to kindly to having someone of her ethnic background on their screen, and in particular what harsh criticism she suffered because of her ‘look’…espespically her afro hair – Vile and cruel letters and comments sent into the BBC.

Good to see things have moved on, and there is so much support for her down the years…Hope she is kept on in some capacity at the Beeb.
