it’s most probably a speaker (like musicians have when they’re performing live) so that the presenters can hear themselves a bit more.

It is, indeed, a foldback speaker!

I always thought it is a light!!

    I admit, I’m not a musician.

It looks like it could also be where the sky strator and its stand plug in, as i’m sure ive seen it used at the newswall in that kinda area before..

Well it either looks like one of two things, Its either one of those monitors where the broadcaster has prompts of his lines – because of corse this is breaking news and they don’t have much time to rehearse what they say on air, so they must be very confident to do so, or it could be an extra microphone so they are heard better.

I think you’ll find, young Ross, that the monitors are to the side of the of the newswall.

As said by Allan earlier (who has insider information!) it is in fact a foldback speaker so that the presenters can hear themselves over the noise in the newsroom.

But if they made noise in the Newsroom then would that not be then heard by us?

What’s that got to do with it?

It can be heard on Sky News Today – but because they use the face mics, they can lower the volume on them, whilst still picking up the presenters voice. These mics are used on the newswall too – that’s why we can’t hear the newsroom from there.
