Today saw the return of the plasma screen presentation position on SNI. This coincided with the anaysis of the Irish budget on the 6:30 bulletin.

Are there any viewing figures available for SNI? What numbers of viewers would it get on an average night?

I am guessing 15-20k for the 6.30 and about 10-15k for the 10pm show. Am I in theballpark or miles off

I saw the plasma newswall being used again in the bullitin last week for the Roy Keane story. It looked very impressive, hopefully we'll see a lot more of it in future programmes.

As for viewership, I remember reading an article somewhere saying that they were higher than that but i'm not sure. If my memory serves me right I think that they get more viewers for the 10pm.

I don't see what the fuss is about really.

The core service has not improved in any way.

The rest is just window dressing. Forget plasmas,

deliver some relevant news please.

but it has. look at sky news ireland in december 04 and look at it now. its totally different. it now has more reporters, the channel is becoming more popular and it is gaining more and more interviews from people in power. for nearly all of their top news stories its not just a report. they get the views from an expert or someone who knows more about the topic than they do. and if they are covering a major story they do not have to go for ad's like tv3 do.

I much prefer SNI to TV3 News. TV3 is bloody awful, starting with the new set. The set looks like it was put together by trainees, with bits copied from other stations but no idea as to how to create a coherent overall image. The graphics are even worse. Worse still is the "news lite" dross content that they specialise in, which is just cheap vox pop's dressed up as news.

If there was any sense in the Irish news business, TV3 would sub-contract news to SNI and create a credible news service. Ideally they could fold INN radio news into SNI and create a genuine competitor to RTE. It could happen: look at the UK, Channel 5 using Sky as it's news provider.

SNI does not live up to the quality of output we've come

to expect from Sky News. The editorial is weak, the reporting is weak.

The presentation is weak. I have yet to see evidence of any semblance

of journalism from the current batch of reporters. The place is evidently

underfunded.

For all their flaws, RTE do at least continue to attempt some journalism,

albeit that their better stories are handed to them!

Ray Kennedy is a talent wasted in SNI.

Jerome and Eibhlene were clever to leave.

First of all you shouldn't compare rt? to sky. rt? is our national news channel its suppost to be the best and it shouldn't need people like you defending it on forums BUT IT DOES! for a national news station which takes E155 off every household it should be a world class news organisation. but unstead of producing quality reports rt? decide to have a reporter for everything they can think of. they even have a marine correspondant (no disrespect). week in week out rte news presenter comes on and says 'we appologise for the loss in connection. Ameturs!!

SNI's real compeditor is TV3 News which I.M.O. is usless. they basically go from report to report with no anaylisis and no world class reporters.

I think it was a really bad move for both eibhilin and jerome. if they had stayed with sni they would have a better chance of getting seen by a world news channel. however they decided to go back to tv3/tg4 and do their shows and not make a name for themselves. nobody ouutside Ireland will watch either of these channels where as sni is beemed all over the world.

AFTER ALL SKY NEWS IRELAND WASN'T NOMINATED AHEAD OF TV3 NEWS FOR IFTA FOR NO REASON!!

I agree - SNI do a far better job than any of their competitors. All you have to do is watch TV3, RTE and SNI on any given day and you can immediately see the difference in quality between the 3 - with SNI coming out on top!

It just goes to show that with all the money that RTE get per year off the ordinary taxpayer, and along with the amount of staff that they have, they still don't manage to be able to come up with any original ideas - they always seem to stay within their 'safe' area when it comes to their production or editorial judgement. At least with SNI they push the boat out at every given chance and are not afraid to try different and new things, which give us the viewer more variety than the boring bullitins the other stations put out.

SNI has made a difference in this country - its woken the viewers up to a more modern day, fast paced news service which has long been overdue!

I watched their end of year programme in which they reviewed the years events - excellent job done, very professional and a credit to them- SNI competitors take note and take a leaf out of their book!!
