The BBC is to hold a day of action on Thursday to publicise the plight of Gaza correspondent Alan Johnston, who is thought to have been abducted.

BBC Director-General Mark Thompson is making a direct appeal for his release.

Poster sites will be unveiled in London, and a special programme is being simulcast on BBC World, BBC News 24, Sky News and Al Jazeera English.

The appeal comes exactly one month after Mr Johnston went missing on his way home from work on 12 March.

"Alan is the BBC's highly experienced and respected correspondent and one of only a few Western journalists who have been permanently based in Gaza," a BBC statement says. "He has spent three years living and working in the area."

A simulcast programme will go on air from Ramallah at 1430 BST (1330 GMT) anchored by Jeremy Bowen, the BBC's Middle East Editor.

It will incorporate packages from the BBC, Al-Jazeera, CNN, and Sky. It will also have live reports from BBC, Al-Jazeera and Sky anchors and correspondents in Ramallah, Gaza and London.

Edit what I said in my last post. Although it's been almost a month since his kidnap, it's heartening to see BBC, Sky and AJI willing to show some solidarity over this.

I just heard on the news at the top of the hour that Alan has been killed. Alastair Yates was talking with Bridget Kendal about the unconfirmed reportes. I hope that it's not true. I really like Alan.

Must stress that this is unconfirmed at the moment, and it is merely one group making this claim.

Obviously we must hope that this is proven to be wrong, and he may still be released alive. My thoughts are with Mr Johnston's family and friends this evening. Let us hope that we will soon hear more positive news.
