ITV will broadcast the World Cup 2018 fixture between Argentina and Iceland this afternoon.

This opening match in Group D takes place at the Spartak Stadium in Moscow.

This will be Iceland’s first-ever World Cup fixture and they face something of a baptism of fire as they go up against the two-time winners, who boast a squad full of household names, not least five-time Ballon d’Or recipient Lionel Messi.

However, despite being outmatched on paper, the team representing a nation of approximately 350,000 inhabitants – roughly three percent of the population of the Argentine capital Buenos Aires – will take great heart from their performance at their lone appearance at an international tournament.

At Euro 2016 in France, they progressed to the knockout phase and embarrassed England by beating them 2-1 in the last 16, before losing to the hosts in the quarter-finals.

This should serve as a warning to the South Americans that to take Iceland lightly could prove calamitous, but it would rank alongside the great shocks of all time should an upset occur.

Coverage starts at 1.30pm on ITV and ITV HD, where Mark Pougatch is joined in the studio by Gary Neville, Henrik Larsson and Patrice Evra.

Match commentary comes from Sam Matterface and Glenn Hoddle.

The match will also be streamed live on the ITV Hub
