How did you get started in broadcasting?
Began as a graduate trainee with the Belfast Telegraph, and then applied for, and got, a reporter’s post at RTE’s Belfast office.

When was that?
1977

Why News broadcasting?
‘Cause I was a news journalist with the newspaper – it was a natural transition.

Where else would have viewers seen or heard you before?
See the above.

What would you like to do before your career ends?
Live to a ripe old age. And, possibly, finish out the Robert Kee series Ireland – A History. A landmark set of documentaries, which finishes in the last century.

What do you like to do in your spare time?
Spend more time with the family.

What advice would you give to anyone that would like to get into the broadcasting world?
I’d prefer to answer that as – how to get into journalism. If you’re going to college, work for the student newspaper, and/or the radio station. Your degree gets you through the door – after that, it’s – what else did you do? For people not going to college – try and get into your local newspaper – learn shorthand, and the basics of journalism.
