Imogen Sellers – Q&A

Name?
Imogen Sellers

Age?
32

Where are you from?
Frome, in Somerset.

How did you get started in broadcasting?
I started out as a reporter on the Bath Chronicle.

When was that?
That was in 1997.

Why News broadcasting?
I always enjoyed writing and performing, so news broadcasting seemed to be perfect for me!

Where else would have viewers seen or heard you before?
I have worked as a newsreader on Bath FM and a reporter on HTV.

What is your Best on-air moment?
I think one of my best on-air moments has to be reporting live from the Bristol Balloon Fiesta. It was pouring with rain throughout the entire programme. I have naturally curly hair which I straighten for television – by the end of the very wet outside broadcast with the balloons, my straight hair had sprung back into curls!

What is your Worst on-air moment?
I was once presenting breakfast news when a pigeon somehow managed to get into the studio. I am terrified of birds so during the bulletin you can hear me trying to stifle a scream more than once. During our last bulletin the pigeon left me it’s calling card on the desk, if you know what I mean!

What would you like to do before your career ends?
I would secretly like to be able to say Here’s one I made earlier on Blue Peter, but I think I might have missed the boat on that one! But all I really want to do is carry on presenting and reporting the news.

What do you like to do in your spare time?
I have a little boy, so spare time has become a thing of the past! But when he’s gone to bed, I love to go running. I’m a new convert and it helps to keep me fit and well! I also love going out for dinner with my husband and friends.

What advice would you give to anyone that would like to get into the broadcasting world?
Don’t give up. Write letters, ring up editors, offer to work for free, get work published or broadcast in local papers, on websites, on radio. Be a pain and show you really, really want to do it. I got 52 rejection letters when I first left Journalism college – but the 53rd was a yes!

A big thanks to Imogen for taking part.
