Jayne Secker – Q&A

Name?
Jayne Secker

Where are you from?
I was born in Northumberland, and grew up in the North East.

How did you get started in Broadcasting?
I did work experience from my mid-teens with my local paper and regional TV. While I was at University (doing a Film and Media degree) I edited the student paper and pestered my BBC Radio Newcastle for work experience. Their breakfast news editor gave me a chance and after I graduated they took me back as a paid trainee.

When was that?
1996

Why News broadcasting?
How many reasons do you want? I love the immediacy. There’s nothing like the buzz of working on a big breaking news story. You get to meet and interview the most incredible people. You have the priviliege of travelling to the most extraordinary parts of the world and watching history happen in front of your eyes.

Where else would have viewers seen or heard you before?
I worked in BBC local radio in Newcastle, Cumbria, Cleveland and Oxford. I was also at HTV in Bristol before SKY.

What is your Best on-air moment?
Reporting from the deck of an American ship during the first night of ‘Shock and Awe’. We used a nightvison camera to film the Tomahawk missiles as they shoot off into the night just a few feet from us.

What is your Worst on-air moment?
I’ve tripped up over my words a few times. Getting your own name wrong on air is always mildly embarrasing…

What would you like to do before your career ends?
I would love the challenge of being a foreign bureau chief, as well as the opportunity to live and work abroad.

What do you like to do in your spare time?
Sleep, swim and go dancing. Usually in that order.

What advice would you give to anyone that would like to get into the broadcasting world?
The competition inside the industry is firce, so don’t even consider it unless you are 110% committed. If you’re still not deterred, get as much work experience as you can, write articles for whoever you can and take any route in to a company you can, no matter how junior it may seem. Best of luck.

A big thanks to Jayne for taking part.
