Catherine Jones – Q&A

Name?
Catherine Jones

Age?
34

Where are you from?
Southend, Essex

How did you get started in broadcasting?
At Buckinghamshire’s local radio station, Mix 96.

When was that?
1994

Why News broadcasting?
I want to tell people about important issues that affect their lives (very worthy I realise!) Plus it’s a “jack of all trades” type of job, combining lots of different skills; a bit of acting, a bit of researching, a bit of arguing etc etc

Where else would have viewers seen or heard you before?
IRN, News Direct radio in London

What is your Best on-air moment?
Doing well on a big story always gives me a buzz – hard to choose between them though!

What is your Worst on-air moment?
Losing my train of thought during a live is always a nightmare.

What would you like to do before your career ends?
Do a perfect live

What do you like to do in your spare time?
Play with my daughter

What advice would you give to anyone that would like to get into the broadcasting world?
You get labelled as a reporter or producer or whatever very early, so start in the type of job you want to do eventually: a reporter at a local radio station is far more likely to end up a reporter on national news than someone who goes to work as a runner or general assistant or junior producer in a national newsroom.

A big thanks to Catherine for taking part.
