7pm: The fun kicks off with the cast of West End smash Matilda singing a medley of songs from the show, boy band JLS performing some of their greatest hits in Albert Square and a treat for Doctor Who fans with an exclusive clip from the long-awaited 50th anniversary episode, which is being shown in just over a week, on Saturday, November 23.

8pm: Ice-skating stars Jayne Torvill and Christopher Dean swap their skates for dance shoes to go head to head in this year’s Strictly challenge.

8.30pm: One Direction make their first appearance of the night, Gary Barlow introduces a nationwide choir of 1,500 children united in song and Frank Skinner banishes more celebrities’ pet hates in a special edition of Room 101.

9pm: Terry is joined by co-host Fearne Cotton as Harry Hill presents his own remake of a classic 1980s pop video – with a host of celebrity cameos – Albert Square also comes alive with dance, as EastEnders favourites demonstrate a multitude of styles, including Charleston, Bollywood, urban, tango and ballroom. The One Show’s Alex Jones and Team Rickshaw complete their week-long 700-mile journey, the cast of Call the Midwife tackle a song-and-dance medley, and Ellie Goulding performs the official Children in Need single, How Long Will I Love You.

10pm BBC Two: Fearne Cotton and boy band One Direction host a music-packed segment. Rapper Tinie Tempah plays his latest track, and there are previously unaired performances from this week’s Children in Need Rocks concerts, which were organised by Take That’s Gary Barlow.

10.35pm: Terry Wogan returns for the fundraising marathon, joined by Zoe Ball. First up to entertain is last year’s X Factor winner James Arthur, before Catherine Tate revives her Nan character in a special edition of Holby City which sees the feisty pensioner causing trouble on the wards.

11pm: There’s a boy-band collision as McFly are joined on stage by their old pals Busted, and internet sensation Ylvis make their British TV debut with The Fox (What Does the Fox Say?)

11.30pm: Monty Python star Eric Idle introduces a performance by the cast of West End hit Spamalot, JLS and McFly face off in a battle of the boy-bands competition, and Dido sings one of her biggest hits.

12am: Radio 1 breakfast host Nick Grimshaw partners Sir Terry for the final leg of the night, which includes a comedy lip-sync duel between Greg James and Russell Kane. Wet Wet Wet perform their number one smash Love Is All Around and the cast of The Commitments stage show perform a rip-roaring R’n’B medley of songs from the show. Before the team winds down for the night, there’ll be the usual highlights from the evening, before they announce the final total. Last year a record £26,757,446 was raised – can this figure possibly be bettered?

Sir Terry Wogan, Children in Need Life President, says, “Every year the BBC Children in Need Appeal night is a testament to the extraordinary generosity of the British people. We’ve got the lovely Zoe Ball joining the firm this year, along with the wonderful Tess and Fearne and Mr Grimshaw, and the inimitable Pudsey. They’re all on hand to prop me up as we traverse a fantastic night of entertainment towards what we hope to be another record-breaking total.”

Coverage starts at 7pm on BBC One.. Schedule is subject to change
