Oona was an MP from 1997 to 2005, when she was defeated by Respect candidate and former Labour MP George Galloway.

Since 2005, King began a career in the media and in 2007 published her autobiography The Oona King Diaries: House Music. She was appointed by PM Gordon Brown to act as his Senior Policy Adviser on Equalities and Diversity and Faith and In January 2009 was appointed head of diversity at Channel 4.
